De Dana Dan Review

Be forewarned. De Dana Dan is the most bizarre film from the maharaja of laughathons, Priyadarshan. Not even in your wildest dream you'd think that Priyadarshan would place almost an entire film in a hotel and have its entire cast, comprising of 26 [or is it 27?] characters, most of them weirdos, interacting with each other. Brings back memories of BLAME IT ON THE BELLBOY? May be!

But Priyadarshan needs to be credited for pulling it off. There are times when you laugh hysterically at the most outlandish jokes and situations. There are times when a raised eyebrow or a wide-open jaw makes you break into a guffaw.

Be cautioned. De Dana Dan is a loud film, with each and every character screaming on top of his/her voice, with the characters shouting, running, even floating and swimming in the end.

But what do you expect in a Priyadarshan film that has a title like De Dana Dan? The promos never promised path-breaking or thought-provoking cinema that would give birth to debates and discussions. So why look for logic in this one?

De Dana Dan makes no qualms of narrating a story you haven't heard before. Here, the story is non-existent and it's left on Priyadarshan to mix-n-match those two dozen characters and keep the momentum alive for the next 2.45 hours.

De Dana Dan promises laughter and entertainment and sticks to its promise. This one's not for the hard-nosed types, but for those who worship escapist cinema. Who want to chuckle, giggle and chortle at those mindless jokes. In short, De Dana Dan is a pure dhamaal entertainer!

Nitin [Akshay Kumar] is a butler, cook, driver, watchman, gardener to a wealthy female industrialist [Archana Puran Singh] in Singapore. Like any young man, Nitin too dreams of a better life. He desperately wants to become rich and marry the love of his life, Anjali [Katrina Kaif], who supports him financially.

Ram [Suniel Shetty], Nitin's best friend, also came to Singapore with the dream of striking it rich, but ended up a courier delivery man. He falls for Manpreet [Sameera Reddy], but her high society parents will never approve of marriage, not unless Ram has lots and lots of money.

In the midst of all this is Harbans [Paresh Rawal], a shrewd businessman, who's looking for ways to multiply his income and avoid his debtors. He decides the best way would be to marry his son [Chunky Pandey] off to a girl whose parents can give him a large dowry. He is introduced to Manpreet's parents at a function and is impressed by their social status. He introduces himself as a well-established businessman, impresses them and they decide to get Manpreet and Harbans' son married.

With several factors working against them, Nitin and Ram soon reach a dead end in their relationships. When both receive ultimatums from their girlfriends, they realize that only a life of vice can help them out of their misery. They come up with an audacious plan to kidnap someone important and demand a ransom.

The kidnapping goes awry and both hide at a local hotel while waiting for the ransom money. But misfortune is never far and the kidnapping spirals out of control.

Meanwhile, Manpreet's wedding reception is being held at the same hotel that Nitin and Ram are hiding in. Soon, they are joined by a motley set of characters including a Chinese Don [Asrani], a hired assassin [Johny Lever], a ACB police inspector [Sharat Saxena], a club dancer [Neha Dhupia], an ambassador [Vikram Gokhale], a young frustrated double crossing wife [Aditi Govitrikar], a letch [Shakti Kapoor], a drunken waiter [Rajpal Yadav] and a dead body nobody wants to check into the hotel.

De Dana Dan is atypical Priyadarshan film that has the unmistakable stamp all over it. But, at the same time, De Dana Dan is erratic and uneven - energetic at times, lethargic at places. Also, the culmination to the film is very similar to the director's earlier works, with the entire cast running helter-skelter.

On the flip side, you miss Akshay's presence in the second hour. He disappears [gets locked in a cupboard] for at least 20 minutes and the focus, hence, shifts to the other characters. His fans will miss his presence, for sure. Besides, the film tends to get very lengthy towards the second half and overtly verbose too.

Director Priyadarshan is synonymous with comedies and the ace storyteller promises laughter in abundance. Handling so many characters, plus making a film on mistaken identities could be very tough, but the director gets it right. Pritam's music is alright, while the RDB track, 'Paisa', is the pick of the lot. Salim-Sulaiman's background score is energetic. K. Ahambaram's cinematography is alright.

The review would be incomplete if one ignored the dialogue writer's [Jay Master] contribution to the film. The lines are laced with wit and soaked in humour and bring the house down on several occasions.

De Dana Dan has so many characters that it gets difficult to pinpoint or single out any one actor. Akshay is at his best in a Priyadarshan film and De Dana Dan proves it. Suniel is natural to the core. Paresh is incredible; he pitches in a superb act. Katrina and Sameera don't have much to do. Amongst the plethora of actors, Johny Lever, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Joshi, Asrani, Vikram Gokhale and Archana Puransingh deserve special mention.

On the whole, De Dana Dan is targeted at the masses and it delivers laughter in abundance. Leave your brains behind to enjoy this madcap entertainer!

'Namastey London' - old wine in new bottle

Though Vipul Shah's comic-love story 'Namastey London' releasing Friday is an oft told story, he has made it a complete entertainer with a witty script.

The film, starring Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Rishi Kapoor, is about a desi boy trying to woo his NRI wife.

The story goes something like this-

Jasmeet Singh or Jazz (Katrina Kaif). Born and brought up in London, Jazz wants everything that's western, including a husband. But her father Manmohan Singh (Rishi Kapoor) is hell bent on finding her an Indian husband and lands up in India in search of a suitable guy. Here he meets Arjun (Akshay Kumar) a rough and tough farmer who can barely speak English.

Without a second thought, he finalises Jazz's marriage with Arjun. Arjun is obviously over the moon when he marries the beautiful and sophisticated Jazz. But this soon turns into misery when he finds out that the marriage means nothing to Jazz and she is determined to marry her British boyfriend.

Caught in this emotional tug of war between father and daughter, poor Arjun is helplessly and hopelessly in love with his beautiful but unyielding wife.

After marriage, Arjun and Jazz fly back to London where he is forced to watch his wife romancing another man. Jazz's behaviour hurts Arjun but he doesn't give up hope. He is determined to win everybody's hearts. Will stubborn Jazz be the exception?

The film will work if it is not too preachy. Akshay carries such roles with elan. Katrina, who actually hails from Britain, is expected to do justice to the role as well.

Shooting speculations on Namastey London

One of the most important aspects of a film is its cinematography but in the case of Vipul Shah’s Namastey London that’s exactly what remained a mystery till the end. At one time there was a rumour that highly acclaimed Hollywood cameraman Dariusz Wolski (Pirates of the Caribbean) was supposed to shoot the film, then recently it was said that the cinematographer of Troy, Peter Field was roped in to do the film. And then there were speculations that the film will have 3 cinematographers. So what exactly is the truth?

Vipul Shah clears all the false theories. He says “There is a misconception about this and I have explained it to so many people. Earlier Peter Field was going to shoot the film. He was the director of photography of Troy, but unfortunately he had to drop out at the last moment. Then Jonathan Bloom came on board. Jonathan is a very high profile cinematographer in London and is the only one who has shot the film. I have been clarifying this for a very long time, but it seems that people aren’t aware”.

But why a foreign cinematographer for the film? “Why do you ask that just for the cinematographer? Apart from him, my film’s costume designer is Alison Forbes whose last major film was omorrow Never Dies. The makeup artist of my film, Kateling, is the head make up artist at the BBC. My casting director is Claire Saunders whose last film was Woody Allen’s Match Point. So my entire crew is from Hollywood and they are not just amateurs in Hollywood, they are highly qualified professionals in Hollywood. The idea is to make a better film which can compete on International level, compete with anything we are doing in India. Today’s generation, today’s audience is very knowledgeable, very sharp. It’s very difficult to please them and if you want them to like your film, you have to give them something really good.”

Namastey London stars Katrina Kaif, Akshay Kumar and Upen Patel. Ask Vipul if we see another love triangle coming up and he is quick to clarify, “Upen Patel is paired opposite a British girl in the film. Her name is Tiffany Mulheron”.

Will Akshay be third time lucky this Diwali?

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is known for coming out with blockbusters during the Diwali-Eid festival period.

In 2004, he took on Shah Rukh Khan's "Veer-Zaara" with "Aitraaz" and continued the trend last year by beating Salman Khan's "Kyon Ki" with "Garam Masala".

This year, it's a clash between Shah Rukh's "Don" and Akshay's "Jaan-e-Mann". Sajid Nadiadwala, the producer of the Akshay-starrer, is confident about the film and its prospects.

Trade pundits have already declared it a winner with the record-breaking distribution deals and the high decibel buzz about the film.

Looks like Akshay might be on a hat-trick this year.

`Jaan-E-Mann` - Akshay's straight 3rd Diwali / Idd release

Akshay seems to becoming a Diwali /Idd release specialist. He has always had a block-buster during the festival period. 2 years back he took on SRK's 'Veer Zaara' with 'Aitraaz' and followed it up last year with 'Garam Masala' as a face/off with Salman's 'Kyon Ki'.

This year again it's a repeat clash with SRK'S 'Don' v/s 'Jaan-e-maan', which combines the box office & charismatic force of two superstars. Sajid Nadiadwala is confident of Jaan-e-maan and his superstars. In fact the trade pundits have already declared it a winner, what with the record breaking distribution deals and the high decibel buzz on the film.

Also Akshay is on a consecutive box office run since 'Aitraaz'. So will the Diwali/Idd release specialist create the fire works at the Box Office this year too? Surely seems so, with all the indicators moving in that direction!!

Qoutes

I wish Tyra had told me herself that I resemble Tom Cruise. I take it as a compliment. But believe me, I'm not aping him; any resemblance is sheer coincidence

Stardom is like a pencil, it becomes smaller with use.

Would you believe that I have played a police inspector in 26 films in my career spanning 40 films. It is time I did something different.

Yes, I am doing not one but two films with Mr. Bachchan, Dharmesh Darshan's Rishta-The Bond of Love and Vipul Shah's next. What more can I ask for?

The day I open my mouth, all those who claim to give the press inside information won't know where to hide.

Tina's mother, Dimple, is the best mother-in-law I could have ever hoped for.
