'Namastey London' - old wine in new bottle

Though Vipul Shah's comic-love story 'Namastey London' releasing Friday is an oft told story, he has made it a complete entertainer with a witty script.

The film, starring Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif and Rishi Kapoor, is about a desi boy trying to woo his NRI wife.

The story goes something like this-

Jasmeet Singh or Jazz (Katrina Kaif). Born and brought up in London, Jazz wants everything that's western, including a husband. But her father Manmohan Singh (Rishi Kapoor) is hell bent on finding her an Indian husband and lands up in India in search of a suitable guy. Here he meets Arjun (Akshay Kumar) a rough and tough farmer who can barely speak English.

Without a second thought, he finalises Jazz's marriage with Arjun. Arjun is obviously over the moon when he marries the beautiful and sophisticated Jazz. But this soon turns into misery when he finds out that the marriage means nothing to Jazz and she is determined to marry her British boyfriend.

Caught in this emotional tug of war between father and daughter, poor Arjun is helplessly and hopelessly in love with his beautiful but unyielding wife.

After marriage, Arjun and Jazz fly back to London where he is forced to watch his wife romancing another man. Jazz's behaviour hurts Arjun but he doesn't give up hope. He is determined to win everybody's hearts. Will stubborn Jazz be the exception?

The film will work if it is not too preachy. Akshay carries such roles with elan. Katrina, who actually hails from Britain, is expected to do justice to the role as well.

Shooting speculations on Namastey London

One of the most important aspects of a film is its cinematography but in the case of Vipul Shah’s Namastey London that’s exactly what remained a mystery till the end. At one time there was a rumour that highly acclaimed Hollywood cameraman Dariusz Wolski (Pirates of the Caribbean) was supposed to shoot the film, then recently it was said that the cinematographer of Troy, Peter Field was roped in to do the film. And then there were speculations that the film will have 3 cinematographers. So what exactly is the truth?

Vipul Shah clears all the false theories. He says “There is a misconception about this and I have explained it to so many people. Earlier Peter Field was going to shoot the film. He was the director of photography of Troy, but unfortunately he had to drop out at the last moment. Then Jonathan Bloom came on board. Jonathan is a very high profile cinematographer in London and is the only one who has shot the film. I have been clarifying this for a very long time, but it seems that people aren’t aware”.

But why a foreign cinematographer for the film? “Why do you ask that just for the cinematographer? Apart from him, my film’s costume designer is Alison Forbes whose last major film was omorrow Never Dies. The makeup artist of my film, Kateling, is the head make up artist at the BBC. My casting director is Claire Saunders whose last film was Woody Allen’s Match Point. So my entire crew is from Hollywood and they are not just amateurs in Hollywood, they are highly qualified professionals in Hollywood. The idea is to make a better film which can compete on International level, compete with anything we are doing in India. Today’s generation, today’s audience is very knowledgeable, very sharp. It’s very difficult to please them and if you want them to like your film, you have to give them something really good.”

Namastey London stars Katrina Kaif, Akshay Kumar and Upen Patel. Ask Vipul if we see another love triangle coming up and he is quick to clarify, “Upen Patel is paired opposite a British girl in the film. Her name is Tiffany Mulheron”.
